And now for part two!
Instead of a beloved and critically-acclaimed feature, today we’re watching a cheesy-as-hell TV special by Rankin and Bass. They’re the same folks that brought us the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer we’ve all seen a million times – but this is better (in my humble opinion).
Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town is a Santa origin story, tracing his life from orphaned baby to jolly old man delivering toys. Along the way, it answers all the burning questions you’ve always had about Santa (how do the reindeer fly?), but Eric has lived his whole life in the dark.
The movie is available on Amazon and will play on Freeform NUMEROUS times the week of Christmas. If you do go with Amazon, we strongly recommend fast-forwarding through the unfortunate songs “If You Sit On My Lap Today” and “My World is Beginning Today,” which don’t usually make it onto TV. We warned you.
Also, this may be the best special overall, but it does not include the best song. That honor goes to the otherwise less-than-great Year Without Santa Claus. Behold, Snow Miser and Heat Miser:
Have a wonderful holiday season, and we’ll see you in the new year!
