Pacific Rim: My 2nd-Favorite Szechuan Restaurant

Being an iTunes subscriber to Giant Geek vs. Mega n00b really pays off in unexpected ways: Three straight weeks, three late blog posts about episodes that hit iTunes on Wednesday. Oops. Sorry.

For those of you who don’t subscribe on iTunes: Hey, here’s a brand new episode!!!

Ancient dinosaurs that have been living under the ocean floor for millions of years (for some reason) are attacking. What do you do?

Correct answer: Build giant robots to beat the crap out of them.

Pacific Rim is not an intellectually challenging movie, but it is a lot of fun, and it’s the topic of this week’s episode. It stars Charlie Hunnam as robot pilot Raleigh Becket, Idris Elba as a shouty general, and Rinko Kikuchi as aspiring pilot Mako Mori.

As I mention in the intro to this episode, I went into the theater for Pacific Rim with low expectations and wound up really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. And there’s one thing we don’t discuss in the episode that I want to bring up here (very minor spoilers follow).

The voice of the computer on-board our main fightin’ robot, Gipsy Danger, is provided by Ellen McLain, a.k.a. GLaDOS from the Portal video games. This would mean nothing to Emily at the time of this writing, but Portal is absolutely on our list for a future episode where I’m the geek. To be totally honest, I think I missed a good chunk of the climactic scene in the theater because I was so distracted by that familiar voice

For any listeners who have played the games, here’s a quick non-spoilery video featuring McLain’s GlaDOS/Gipsy Danger voice:
